“AI psychosis” isn’t a formal diagnosis, but people use the term to describe when AI interactions seem to intensify paranoia, delusional thinking, obsessive pattern-seeking, or a loss of reality testing. A person may start treating AI as an oracle, believe it is sending hidden messages, or feel that it confirms a personal theory that isn’t grounded in shared reality.
Psychedelics can magnify similar risks. The knowledge base notes that psychedelics may worsen anxiety, paranoia, depersonalization, derealization, false insights, and in some cases acute psychosis or manic episodes, especially outside controlled settings or in people with underlying vulnerability. For someone already struggling with unstable reality testing, psychedelics can act like an amplifier.
The combination is risky because both can increase salience: ordinary thoughts and coincidences can start to feel intensely meaningful. Psychedelics can loosen ordinary boundaries between self, symbol, and environment, while AI can provide fluent, confident responses that may be misread as deeply authoritative. Together, they can create a feedback loop that reinforces unstable narratives.
This is especially concerning for people with:
– personal or family history of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder
– bipolar I disorder
– severe anxiety, panic, or paranoia
– dissociative disorders
– prior psychosis or mania
Warning signs include believing AI is sending coded messages, feeling watched or chosen, losing track of metaphor vs. fact, sleep loss with racing thoughts, or continued confusion after the psychedelic experience ends.
Harm reduction:
– pause psychedelics if you feel mentally unstable
– reduce compulsive AI use, especially if it increases rumination
– prioritize sleep, food, hydration, and grounding
– reality-check with trusted humans, not just AI
– avoid mixing psychedelics with other substances
– seek professional help if symptoms escalate or persist
Bottom line: AI and psychedelics can both be meaningful tools, but in vulnerable states they can also reinforce confusion and paranoia. If you’re already feeling “unreal” or stuck in a spiraling narrative, the safest move is to step back, ground, and get support.
